A tragic blaze in Baltimore's Greektown neighborhood has resulted in the death of a 71-year-old woman and the displacement of several residents. Baltimore City firefighters quickly responded to the emergency call, arriving within minutes. Despite their speed and the brave efforts of neighbors, Patricia Lesnick could not escape her engulfed row home and, unfortunately, did not survive the fire that tore through the 300 block of South Newkirk Street, according to CBS News Baltimore.
The incident unfolded Monday evening and quickly escalated to a three-alarm fire. Chief James Wallace of the Baltimore Fire Department stated that over 100 firefighters were dispatched to combat the intensifying inferno. As reported by CBS News Baltimore, fire crews worked tirelessly, removing parts of the roofs to ventilate better and extinguish the fire. However, several other homes suffered extensive smoke and water damage.
Neighbors risked their lives to help, and now the Greektown Neighborhood Association is raising funds for those affected. According to president Tricia Kontoudis, nearly $6,000 has already been raised. The money will support displaced families who can't store physical donations, making financial help significant during this difficult time, as detailed by WMAR-2 News.
After the fire, investigators review security camera footage to find its cause. Residents' daily lives and traffic in the area are still disrupted, with emergency services and the Red Cross providing support. Firefighters have also installed smoke detectors in nearby homes, highlighting the importance of fire safety. The cause of the fire remains unknown, but donations to help those affected can be made through a link shared by WMAR-2 News.
