The Metropolitan Police Department has reported the arrest of a suspect in the case of a hammer assault that occurred in Northwest, D.C. this past summer. On a Saturday night in July, on the bustling strip of 18th Street, a victim was violently attacked with a hammer. The suspect then made his escape in a vehicle, leaving the scene before law enforcement arrived.
It was not until months later, after an intensive investigation, that the police were able to locate and arrest 37-year-old Magel Duarte of Bethesda, Maryland. According to a statement released by the MPD, Duarte was apprehended on November 19, 2024, and is now facing charges of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon.
The original incident occurred on July 13, 2024, around 10:10 p.m., prompting officers from the Third District to respond to the scene.
The detectives' persevering efforts eventually led to the suspect's arrest, which was carried out by the Third District Crime Suppression Team based on a D.C. Superior Court arrest warrant.
