The mystery of a missing New York couple, Charles and Catherine Romer, may be close to resolution after a vehicle was found submerged in a Georgia pond. The Romers disappeared in 1980 while driving back from a Florida vacation and were last seen at a hotel in Brunswick, Georgia. Decades later, a sonar search team discovered their 1979 Lincoln Continental behind the hotel, according to CBS News.

Shelly McKinney, from the Sunshine State Sonar Team, led the crew that found the vehicle. "We make our maps and one by one we start from where they were last seen and kind of work our way out," McKinney told CBS News. The investigation has shifted focus, now considering the possibility of an accidental drive into the pond instead of the previously suspected criminal act.

This breakthrough comes after more than 40 years of effort, leaving law enforcement and the Romer family seeking closure. Human remains were recovered after the pond was drained, providing a final piece to the puzzle. Christine Seaman Heller, Catherine Romer's granddaughter, shared the family's pain, saying, "All the investigations and psychics and everything, the police, they worked so hard, and Blackwater divers have been searching for years. And they thought it was foul play," Heller told abc7NY.

Former hotel manager Andy Mavermat reflected on the mystery, suggesting that some believed the couple may have been targeted due to their wealth. "I just hope it's gonna bring whatever happens, however it plays out, it brings closure for the family," Mavermat said in a statement to abc7NY. While evidence now points to an unintended incident, the Glynn County Police Department is working with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to fully understand what happened four decades ago.
