A Brockton man, 37-year-old Johnny Richmond, has been formally indicted on several counts related to a July stabbing that took place at a local park, resulting in the death of another man. According to NBC Boston, the Plymouth County District Attorney's Office announced yesterday that a grand jury had indicted Richmond on charges of murder, carrying a dangerous weapon, and two counts of threats to kill.
The indictment comes months after the incident at Finnegan Park at Crescent and Montello Streets, where Richmond allegedly threatened multiple people with a knife. As NBC Boston reported, the altercation escalated when 39-year-old Edmar Goncalves of Fall River intervened and was fatally stabbed. Richmond has not been yet scheduled to arraign in Brockton Superior Court.
Details of the stabbing emerged after authorities responded to emergency calls on the evening of July 20. As stated in a Boston Globe report, Goncalves was found with a stab wound and later pronounced dead at Good Samaritan Hospital. Following the incident, Richmond was arrested near the park after police interviews with witnesses at the scene.
After his arrest, Richmond was also treated for a laceration on his hand, and no bail was granted following his not guilty plea in July in Brockton District Court. The Boston Globe relayed that "the indictment moves the case to the Superior Court system." Neither reports indicated whether Richmond had acquired representation to comment on his behalf concerning the charges he is facing.
