Thanksgiving morning took an unfortunate turn for eight Carmichael residents when frying a turkey led to a garage fire that quickly spread. ABC10 reports that the incident happened around 10:45 a.m. on the 6000 block of Rye Way, rendering a duplex uninhabitable and displacing the eight individuals residing there.
The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District, frying a turkey in the garage ignited the blaze that then consumed living spaces in the unit it started, according to KCRA. Major damage was reported in one unit, while the adjacent unit suffered moderate damage. Thankfully, several dogs were rescued by fire crews, and no human injuries were reported.
As a precautionary reminder for future celebrations, officials emphasize the dangers of indoor turkey frying. They advise ensuring the bird is fully defrosted and patted dry before being introduced to the boiling oil. A safe fry should be conducted at a considerable distance from any structures – approximately 25-30 feet, recommends ABC10 – to prevent accidents like the fire on Rye Way.
The displaced residents are now faced with the difficult task of rebuilding their lives in the aftermath of this disaster. The community around them holds close in their thoughts as the holiday season continues, unlike any other they've faced. With the safety lessons from this incident fresh in mind, perhaps future festivities can avoid such fiery disruptions.
