Over the weekend, a fire lieutenant at a Grand Rapids Township fire station experienced a violent assault that led to felony charges against the alleged attacker. As reported by WOODTV, Robert Daniel-Brent Joppe, 40, from Cedar Springs, is accused of shoving his finger into the eye of the lieutenant, triggering an emergency response that ended with Joppe's arrest. Charges include assaulting an officer, causing serious injury, and assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, among others.
Initial reports from WZZM13 reveal that Joppe was let into the station under the assumption he was there to work on the concrete. The lieutenant soon discovered that Joppe was not a worker but rather a suicidal individual under the influence of drugs and in possession of a firearm.
As detailed by WZZM13, Joppe now faces a potential 32 years in prison and $19,500 in fines if convicted on all counts. At the arraignment, an emotional Joppe asked for charges and penalties to be repeated as he processed the weight of his actions.
Despite the attack's severity, the lieutenant was released from the hospital to continue recovery at home.
