After more than 100 years of serving as a spiritual cornerstone for its community, St. James Church in Ferndale conducted its final mass yesterday, signaling the end of an era for parishioners and the Archdiocese of Detroit. The church, which first opened its doors in 1919, was home to countless services including Mass, weddings, and baptisms. According to a report by Local 4, the packed final service was a bittersweet farewell for many, including Rev. Paul Chateau who likened the closure to experiencing a death.

In recent months, intense deliberation by the Archdiocese of Detroit focused on the fate of the Our Mother of Perpetual Help Parish which shares two different campuses: the one in Ferndale now closing, and another in Oak Park which will remain active. Despite efforts to positively reverse declining attendance and fundraising shortfalls, the measures enacted were not enough to avoid closure. "I’m abundantly sad but life goes on," Rev. Paul Chateau told Local 4 in an emotional statement after the final service.

The archdiocese initially merged St. James with Our Lady of Fatima in Oak Park in 2012, rebranding to Our Mother of Perpetual Help. As attendance and financial contributions failed to meet the necessary benchmarks despite several attempted interventions, the decision to close the Ferndale location was solidified. The benchmarks, as per a letter from Father Paul Chateau published on the parish's website, were routinely assessed every two months. In an interview with Detroit Free Press, Rev. Paul F. Chateau explained their attempts to maintain St. James as a sustainable location were to no avail.

With the official closing, plans are set for the church to be repurposed, though details of its next chapter remain undisclosed. As for the parish community, members are encouraged to join activities at the Oak Park campus of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Parish to keep the spirit of the parish alive. "The building is closing, not the parish," emphasized Father Chateau in his address to the flock, as per Detroit Free Press. Upcoming transitions include the moving of cremains housed in both worship locations to Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield, with Archbishop Allen Vigneron offering a special blessing during an All Souls Mass, as reported by The Oakland Press.
