Early risers in Charlotte today were greeted by a sky draped in fog and mist, with visibility reduced to a mere four miles. The National Weather Service reports a sultry humidity of 90%, with dewpoint temperatures holding steady at 58°F. Although the mercury read a mild 61°F in the early hours, residents should brace for a brisk shift as the day progresses.
Today's forecast warns of unpredictable weather, with potential showers and thunderstorms in the early morning, followed by a 30% chance of showers, mainly before 9 a.m. According to the National Weather Service, swirling south-southwest winds will give way to a cooler northwest breeze in the afternoon, with gusts possibly reaching up to 25 mph.
As night falls, the restless winds will settle down, but temperatures promise to plummet to a low around 35. A clear sky awaits stargazers tonight, and those planning to hit the sales on Friday will enjoy sunny skies, with a comfortable daytime high near 54. But the weekend heralds an arrival of an unseasonably cold airmass that will make itself at home in the Carolinas into early next week.
The Hazardous Weather Outlook issued by the National Weather Service offers a stark reminder of the tempest's mercurial nature, stating, "One or two of these storms may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts. In addition, a very brief tornado cannot be ruled out." This warning extends from northeast Georgia through Piedmont North Carolina, to Upstate South Carolina. Yet, as Thanksgiving festivities wind down, and leftovers cool in the fridge, the real cold snap is yet to come with Monday and Tuesday delivering biting lows in the lower 20s, coupled with highs that barely graze the 40s.
