The scene unfolded at the apartment complex on Merlane Drive, just off West Sugar Creek Road in the Hidden Valley neighborhood, according to WSOC TV. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department responded to the neighborhood and had officers stationed in the complex's parking lot as the situation developed. A neighbor told Channel 9 that the incident was a standoff, though CMPD has not confirmed that characterization or released further details.
Resident Andrea Wright said more police cars kept arriving as the response grew, and described the scene as unsettling. Watching officers carrying what she called giant guns, along with scopes and helmets, was nerve-wracking, Wright said. Per a neighbor, some apartments were evacuated during the response, a step that aligns with standard CMPD tactical procedure — SWAT officers and crisis negotiators typically establish a perimeter and move nearby residents out of harm's way while attempting to resolve a barricaded-subject situation without casualties, according to past CMPD operations shown in WCNC footage.
A Complex With a Difficult Recent History
Evoke Living at Sugar Creek is a 180-unit affordable housing community spread across eight three-story buildings on nearly 10 acres, developed by Crosland Southeast and completed in 2021 after breaking ground in 2019. The property operates under Low-Income Housing Tax Credit rules, offering rents to families earning up to 60 percent of the area median income.
This is not the first time the complex has drawn a heavy police response. In December 2023, two teenagers, ages 15 and 16, were shot and killed during a morning shooting at the property, according to WSOC TV. More recently, in February 2026, emergency crews transported a person with life-threatening injuries after another shooting was reported on Merlane Drive near the complex, per WCNC.
Ongoing Enforcement Along the Sugar Creek Corridor
The broader West Sugar Creek corridor has been a focus of sustained law enforcement activity in recent months. CMPD's North Tryon Division ran Operation Nite Shade in June, a crime-reduction initiative that led to 10 arrests and the seizure of illegal firearms, fentanyl, and cocaine, as previously reported by Hoodline. Federal crash data from 2019 through 2023 identified the 10-mile stretch of I-85 near West Sugar Creek Road as North Carolina's deadliest highway segment, with 23 fatal crashes recorded.
