Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE) reported a 7.3 percent decline in passenger numbers this past October compared to October 2023, welcoming 848,460 travelers. According to CLE officials, factors beyond their control, including airline flight reductions, were primarily responsible for the dip. Spirit Airlines, facing financial distress, made significant cuts and stood out as the principal contributor to the decline.

The drop in numbers is a shift from the overall trend at CLE this year, which has otherwise seen a positive upward momentum. "Despite October coming in a bit lower than anticipated, we are still gearing up for a busy holiday travel season to close out the year," Bryant L. Francis, C.M., Director of Port Control, told Cleveland19. Despite the October setback, the airport's year-to-date figures remain resilient, with a 4.5 percent increase over the same period last year.

While passenger volume waned, the airline load factor—a measure of how full flights are—saw a slight rise, boosting from 77 percent to 80 percent, as reported by CLE's statement. This efficiency gain suggests that the flights that did operate out of CLE in October were packed more than those during the same month in the previous year.

Despite Spirit Airlines' cutbacks, which included reducing their service to a single flight to Fort Lauderdale, Cleveland.com reports that the airport will hit around 10.25 million passengers this year. This would mark the busiest year for the airport since 2008, when the hub belonged to Continental Airlines.

As CLE looks towards a busy end-of-year holiday rush, it also plans for the future. In 2025, coinciding with the airport's centennial, the launch of a comprehensive Terminal Modernization Development Program is expected to start, ushering in a refreshed era of travel for the airport extending into the next decade, per official airport communications.
