The Corinth High School community is mourning the loss of Callie Pounders, a senior student and standout athlete, who died in a car crash on Monday morning. Principal John Barnett confirmed the tragic news on social media, emphasizing the school's commitment to providing support during this difficult time. Counseling services have been made available for the students and staff throughout the week, according to Barnett's statement reported by WREG.
Callie Pounders was not only a cherished member of the student body but also a significant contributor to the school's athletic success. As the star pitcher of the softball team, Callie led the Lady Warriors to their first state championship earlier this year. Following the news of her passing, the softball team expressed their remembrance, "May your light forever shine!" – a testament to her impact, as noted by FOX13 Memphis.
The details of the accident surfaced from Alcorn County Sheriff Ben Caldwell, who stated that Pounders' vehicle veered off County Road 408 and struck a tree in her attempts to correct its path. She subsequently passed away at Magnolia Regional Health Center in Corinth, as corroborated by The Clarion-Ledger. Her prowess on the field was notable in the championship series against East Central, where she pitched all 14 innings.
The loss has evidently sent shockwaves through the close-knit Corinth community, with Principal Barnett expressing the collective heartache. "It is with great sadness that I inform you that one of our students, Callie Pounders, was killed this morning in a car accident," Barnett stated. "We are heartbroken by this loss, and we grieve with the student’s family and friends," as per The Clarion-Ledger. Barnett also ensured the family's privacy during this time and extended a hand of support from the community.
