As Allegheny County faces a resurgence of COVID-19 cases, the Kane Community Living Center in McKeesport is now a focal point for concerns after officials confirmed an outbreak involving 11 percent of its residents. According to CBS News Pittsburgh, the outbreak began earlier this month and resulted in 23 of the center’s 209 residents testing positive for the virus. Though none have been hospitalized, the county is closely monitoring the situation.
In response to the outbreak, the Health Department has instituted enhanced safety protocols, including sequestering affected residents from the unaffected population within the facility. Despite the outbreak, visitors are still permitted but "are advised to wear masks," as Audacy detailed.
The alarm over rising cases coincides with predictions from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, anticipating a peak in respiratory viruses this winter, possibly even surpassing the surges previously seen this summer. Consequently, local health authorities continue to stress the importance of staying up-to-date with COVID-19 vaccinations, particularly for those at the highest risk of severe disease.
New data from the CDC has been encouraging local vaccination efforts. It shows that nearly 4 in 10 seniors have received a COVID-19 vaccine this year, suggesting a steep increase in vaccination rates compared to the prior year. CBS News Pittsburgh also highlights that Allegheny County's COVID-19 dashboard records decreased fatalities among older individuals. During the 2023-2024 respiratory season, there were 217 deaths in individuals ages 65 and older, compared to 1,611 in 2020-21 and 1,067 in 2021-22.
