A Dearborn neighborhood grappled with violence after a man allegedly entered a home and assaulted the homeowner in broad daylight. The Dearborn Police Department reported the arrest of 29-year-old Kwame Lewis Jones, following the incident that occurred on Saturday at around 12:15 p.m. in the 22000 block of Cleveland Street. Authorities detained Jones accused of a home invasion that escalated into a physical confrontation, according to a statement obtained by CBS News Detroit.
Running away from the scene after the confrontation, witnesses reported seeing Jones, having first been observed pacing outside the residence before making his entry. ClickOnDetroit noted that the homeowner managed to escape with minor injuries, though having been choked by Jones initially. The same source reports that this was not the only incident involving Jones that day; earlier, he allegedly assaulted another individual who was filling up a car tire.
Jones’ legal troubles were compounded as the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office filed charges against him, including first-degree home invasion and assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder. Country Herald shared that on Monday, he appeared before Judge Gene Hunt at the 19th District Court, where he received a $50,000 cash bond along with GPS monitoring. Expectations have been set for Jones's legal proceedings to continue, with a probable cause conference scheduled for Nov. 13, which is looming over the crest of the justice system's horizon.
Local law enforcement and community leaders have been unsparing in their condemnation of the attacks. Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin expressed gratitude regarding the community's vigilance that delivered Jones into custody. "Violent acts and invasion of personal property are not tolerated in our city," Shahin told CBS News Detroit, reaffirming a stance of no tolerance for such acts of aggression. The authorities urge any individuals with more information to come forward to aid in the ongoing investigation.
