A Detroit father is facing charges after his toddler son allegedly shot himself with an unsecured firearm. Richard Williams, 29, has been charged with unsafe storage of a firearm causing injury, a felony offense. The incident took place in the early hours of Oct. 30 at a residence on the 4000 block of Grand Street, where the three-year-old found the handgun and fired it, causing a self-inflicted stomach wound.
The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office emphasized the gravity of the situation. "Another day. Another child injured with a loaded, unsecured gun," Prosecutor Kym Worthy said in the release, adding "Tomorrow it be another if we don't universally pay attention and take this issue seriously," according to CBS News Detroit.
The boy in question was reportedly under the supervision of his father, Williams, at the time of the shooting. He received medical treatment after being taken to the hospital. As reported by CBS News Detroit, Williams was arraigned last Friday and has had his bond set at $50,000, with an additional hearing for bond redetermination to have been held today.
Recent weeks have seen similar instances in Detroit, where firearms not securely stored have led to tragic outcomes involving children. As stated by The Detroit News, there was also an incident involving a 5-year-old girl shot on the city's west side, and another where a 3-year-old boy shot himself with an unsecured gun. "These are our children — and if we cannot unite for them who will we unite for?" Prosecutor Worthy was quoted in a press release from Detroit Police announcing the charges.
Further legal proceedings for Williams include a probable cause hearing scheduled for Friday, Nov. 8, and a preliminary examination on Nov. 14. This pattern of dangerous incidents has sparked a plea from authorities for gun owners to responsibly secure their firearms, so as to prevent any such future occurrences. The story has been confirmed by multiple sources, including audacy, detailing the continued legal developments as they unfold.
