In a bid to curtail dangerous driving habits during the holiday season, El Paso County's law enforcement is stepping up with a 'Blackout' operation targeting distracted, speeding, and impaired drivers. The Sheriff's Office, alongside multiple regional agencies, aims to keep the roads safe through this two-phase initiative.
El Paso County Sheriff Joseph Roybal highlighted the operation's commitment to public safety in a statement, “Speeding, driving recklessly, or while impaired is not a victimless crime. Statistics show speeding is a leading contributor to collisions and a significant factor in traffic deaths and injuries,” according to El Paso County Sheriff’s Office. Roybal emphasized accountability for those found disregarding traffic laws during the upcoming holidays.
The operation, involving the Colorado Department of Transportation and various police departments from the Pikes Peak region, is a concerted effort to ensure road safety. “My Office is committed to ensuring the roads across El Paso County are safe for everyone- drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and bicyclists," said Sheriff Roybal, per El Paso County Sheriff’s Office. He also issued a reminder that his deputies and their partners in law enforcement would not hesitate to hold reckless or impaired drivers accountable.
Agencies participating in the ‘Blackout’ operation include the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, Colorado State Patrol, Colorado Springs Police Department, and others dedicated to reducing traffic incidents during the holiday period.
