Elizabethton’s holiday season officially began with the annual placement of a massive 14-foot, 100-pound wreath on the historic Covered Bridge. Decorated with vibrant red ribbons, the iconic wreath has been a cherished tradition for over 50 years, drawing the community together in festive spirit.
The Carter County Rescue Squad, in collaboration with the Elizabethton Fire Department led by Chief Barry Carrier, carried out the delicate operation. Using a raft and a well-practiced winch system, they carefully hoisted the wreath into place on the side of the bridge, per the City of Elizabethton.
Main Street Elizabethton played a key role in this year’s preparations. Director Courtney Bean ensured the wreath was in perfect condition, carefully arranging every ribbon. As the city’s holiday lights began to illuminate, the wreath once again became a glowing symbol of seasonal cheer.
Chief Carrier, who has participated in the tradition throughout his 30-year career, noted its deep roots in the community. Despite the aging winch and wreath, the team hopes the tradition will continue for years, serving as a beacon of holiday joy for Elizabethton and beyond.
