A devastating blaze claimed the life of one individual and displaced numerous others last night in the Greektown neighborhood of Baltimore. According to WBAL-TV, the Baltimore City Fire Department confirmed that the fire ignited around 5 p.m. and quickly spread through multiple rowhomes located on the 300 block of South Newkirk Street.
Fire Chief James Wallace remarked on the tragedy and the challenges faced by the response team, stating, "Anytime we have something like this, it's really tragic," in an interview reported by CBS News Baltimore. A three-alarm fire drew over 100 firefighters, who arrived within three minutes of the call. However, the fire had already spread, and safety concerns forced crews to work from outside the homes. The response was further complicated, requiring help from Baltimore County Fire and the Department of Public Works.
Amid the burning homes, a victim was discovered on the floor of 308 S. Newkirk Street, which had sustained severe damage. Structural concerns delayed the recovery effort, as firefighters were initially unable to safely enter the building—a challenge highlighting the fire's rapid spread before their arrival, explained Chief Wallace in a statement detailed by WBAL-TV.
Around eight to ten residents have been displaced, with the Red Cross and the Office of Emergency Management on-site to provide much-needed assistance.
