A tragic event unfolded in Northeast Philadelphia where a woman, believed to be in her 20s or 30s, was killed in a hit-and-run incident today. Police said the accident occurred on the 4800 block of Levick Street in the Tacony area around 2 a.m. and despite efforts to save her, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene just after 2:30 a.m. The force of the collision was such that the woman was propelled 200 feet, discovered without her sneakers, and with numerous wounds, as reported by CBS News Philadelphia.
According to NBC Philadelphia, witnesses in a separate vehicle saw a dark-colored SUV, traveling westbound at a high rate of speed on Levick Street, struck the woman as she crossed Edmund Street and then continued without stopping to attend to the victim or the crash. Amidst the chaos left at the scene, strewn car parts were visible and marked by authorities. "Her body was clearly launched a distance of about 200 feet in a westbound direction," Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small stated, "She was hit with such force that she was knocked out of both of her sneakers."
Police have initiated an intensive search for the dark SUV, believed to carry heavy front-end damage from the incident, with the investigation focused on collecting car parts left at the scene and canvassing the area for surveillance footage that might lead to identifying and apprehending the driver responsible for the fatal hit-and-run, as detailed by PHL17. The police have also reached out to the public for any information that could assist their ongoing efforts.
