A 24-year-old man was found shot in the jaw behind the wheel of a crashed gray 2018 Honda Civic on the 600 block of West Montgomery Avenue in North Philadelphia early Monday, and he remains in critical condition as investigators try to determine what happened before first responders arrived. Police say the crash and shooting were discovered around 2:11 a.m., and no arrests have been made.
North Philadelphia police reported that officers found the man behind the wheel after the crash, according to NBC10 Philadelphia. He was taken to a nearby hospital, and investigators have not released details on any potential suspects or a motive. It remains unclear whether the man was shot before the crash occurred or whether the shooting happened at or after the vehicle came to rest.
The 600 block of West Montgomery Avenue sits within the patrol boundaries of the Philadelphia Police Department's 22nd District, whose station house is roughly 11 blocks west at 17th Street and West Montgomery Avenue. Critically injured shooting victims in this stretch of central North Philadelphia are typically rushed to Temple University Hospital, home to Pennsylvania's busiest Level I trauma center for penetrating injuries, often through the city's decades-old “scoop and run” protocol that lets officers transport gunshot victims themselves rather than wait for an ambulance, a practice that dates to a 1987 police policy according to the University of Pennsylvania's Leonard Davis Institute.
A Corridor With a Recent History of Violence
West Montgomery Avenue has seen violence before. In January, a 16-year-old was fatally shot inside a Chipotle on the 1100 block of the same street near Temple University's campus, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. And in March, Hoodline reported a daylight shooting a block over on the neighboring 500 block, where a woman was wounded.
The broader neighborhood has also seen other recent shootings within the 22nd District. Three men were critically wounded in a Ridge Avenue shooting earlier this month with no arrests made, and victims in that case were also taken to Temple University Hospital. Separately, a fatal hit-and-run last week left a man dead on Broad Street not far from the trauma center.
Citywide Shootings Down Sharply, But Not Gone
The incident comes as Philadelphia continues a multi-year decline in gun violence. Philadelphia Police Department preliminary figures show 473 total shooting victims citywide through August 30, a 31.35% drop from the 689 victims recorded over the same period in 2025. The Philadelphia City Controller's office separately reported 119 homicides so far this year as of August 27, a 21% decrease from 2025, alongside 369 nonfatal shooting victims.
The numbers reflect a steep multi-year fall from the modern peak of 2,331 shooting incidents citywide in 2021, which included 506 fatal and 1,825 nonfatal victims, down to 979 total incidents in 2025 — an almost 60% decline over four years, per the City Controller. Research from the Pew Charitable Trusts examining shooting victims between 2022 and 2024 found that 86% were male and 88% were adults, with an average victim age of 29, a demographic profile consistent with the 24-year-old found wounded on West Montgomery Avenue.
Investigation Continues, Tip Line Open
The Philadelphia Police Department is asking anyone with information to call its tip line at 215-686-TIPS (8477). The city also maintains a standing $20,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in any homicide, along with a $10,000 reward specifically for gun violence causing injury within 500 feet of a school, recreation center, or library.
No arrests have been made, and police have not released a motive or suspect description. The investigation remains ongoing as detectives work to determine whether the shooting caused the crash or occurred afterward.
