The Metropolitan Police Department has arrested five individuals linked to the defacement of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee building on H Street. According to the official statement, the incident occurred yesterday and involved a group reportedly spray painting the building and throwing liquid on its walls before fleeing.

Police were called to the scene around 12:30 a.m. and arrived to find the building vandalized and painting supplies abandoned. The officers, casting their sights across the block, located the group suspected to be responsible in the 800 block of Third Street. Charged with Deface Private/Public Property are Gabriella Labrosse, Tiana Trutna, Neliza Moreno, Deena Loreffler, and Maria Ellis, ranging in age from 24 to 51 and hailing from various locations in the vicinity and beyond, as reported by the MPD.

The MPD is treating the case as a potential hate crime, though the investigation is ongoing and the designation could change as new evidence emerges. Even if the police classify it as a hate crime, there is no guarantee that the prosecution will pursue it as such, a nuance that may be overlooked in the immediate reactions and condemnations.

The exact motives of the individuals arrested remain under scrutiny. The Special Liaison Branch has joined the investigation.
