A crash occurred on Hwy 101 in Lane County last Saturday evening. Around 8:10 p.m., a southbound vehicle struck a pedestrian near milepost 192. The pedestrian, identified as 40-year-old Garrick Wall from Florence, was killed in the incident, according to the Oregon State Police.
The accident occurred when Wall, alleged to be walking on the northbound shoulder, attempted to cross the highway at an unlit section that lacked pedestrian crosswalk facilities. During this action, he was struck by a GMC Terrain, operated by 58-year-old James Harpole from Cheshire, Oregon. Wall, who was reportedly wearing dark-colored clothing, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
There was no physical harm to the driver Harpole or his passenger, Charlene Lohf, also 58. The aftermath of the collision, however, extended beyond the immediate scene, disrupting traffic flow on the highway for approximately three hours as Oregon State Police conducted an on-scene investigation.
Various emergency services, including Western Lane EMS, Siuslaw Valley Fire Department, Florence Police, and ODOT, assisted at the scene. The cause of the incident is still under investigation.
