A former police sergeant faced judgment for behavior unbecoming of his badge. Kevin Yudt was convicted on counts of ethnic intimidation and assault after a racially charged altercation at MGM Grand Detroit, as reported by FOX 2 Detroit yesterday.
The incident in question unfolded on April 6, 2023, when Yudt was denied entry to the casino floor due to apparent intoxication. The situation escalated as Yudt, then serving as a sergeant with Westland Police, threatened a security guard with survival in doubt if their paths crossed in Westland. According to the Michigan Department of Attorney General press release, the former officer also made physical contact with the guard while making racially offensive remarks.
In a statement released by the Michigan Department of Attorney General's Office, Nessel commended the jury, saying, "No one is above the law, and I applaud the jury for their service and commitment to justice." She underscored that such behavior is intolerable, especially by one sworn to protect and serve. Nessel assured that her office is committed to prosecuting such acts of violence and intimidation.
Following his May 2023 termination from the police force, charges were formally brought against Yudt in May 2024. The verdict, handed down last Friday in Third Circuit Court, found Yudt guilty of two felony counts of ethnic intimidation, carrying a potential sentence of two years each, and a single count of assault and battery, which could add a 93-day misdemeanor to his sentence. Awaiting Yudt, his sentencing is scheduled for December 6 as per the report by FOX 2 Detroit.
