A recall has been issued for a popular form of tortilla strips after a mix-up in packaging led to an undeclared allergen presence, posing a risk to those with wheat allergies. Sugar Foods, the Fresh Gourmet Tortilla Strips Santa Fe Style distributor, initiated the recall as a proactive step following customer reports that surfaced earlier in November.
According to the CBS News report, these tortilla strips are advertised as gluten-free but may contain wheat, a staple ingredient in the crispy onion product also sold by Fresh Gourmet. Consumers alerted the corporation that packages expected to house tortilla strips instead contained crispy onions. The Detroit Free Press highlighted that no illnesses have been reported thus far, but the severity of wheat allergies necessitated the recall.
The recall covers 22 states, and major retailers, including Walmart, Kroger, and Target, are listed among those distributing the potentially contaminated products. Michigan, California, and Texas are among the states affected, and the FDA's recall notice provides a complete list. Concerned customers possessing the 3.5-ounce pouches are entitled to a refund and can return the affected product to the point of purchase.
With an expiration date of June 20, 2025, there is concern that the recalled products may linger on shelves and in pantries for an extended period, creating a long-term risk. The Fresh Gourmet Tortilla Strips' UPC Code, 7 87359 17504 6, and the "Best By Date" are found on the back of the pouch, as noted in the announcement reported by FOX 9.
