In a move to bolster military infrastructure and economic development around military sites, Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida has announced an allocation of over $2.1 million through the Defense Reinvestment Grant Program. This initiative, as reported by the Executive Office of the Governor, feeds into a broader strategy aiming to enhance Florida’s military readiness and support economic diversification in communities that are home to military installations.
"Florida is committed to investing in our military’s capacity, and in military communities,” DeSantis said, confirming his administration's intent to position Florida as the nation's leader in military and veteran friendliness. Secretary of Commerce J. Alex Kelly added, "These awards will have impacts across the state, building on past investments, and further cementing the bond between our defense communities and military installations." Notably, since 2019 under DeSantis’ tenure, the total investment in the state’s military community infrastructures reaches approximately $6.3 million, as per the Executive Office of the Governor.
The grants provided by the Defense Reinvestment Grant Program will directly benefit various economic development organizations and local governments intertwined with military bases and operations. Several entities across Florida are set to utilize these fresh funds for diverse projects designed to tighten military bonds and propel regional economies.
Local beneficiaries of the program include the One Okaloosa Economic Development Council, awarded $122,500 to bolster military installations and diversify the economy, and the Orlando Economic Partnership, receiving $250,000 for advancing military technology. Additional grants, such as the $250,000 to the Pensacola-Escambia Promotion and Development Commission for advanced facilities that will house cyber assets, spell out the state's ambition to keep pace with the evolving defense landscape. The Miami-Dade Beacon Council, granted another quarter-million, plans to use their portion to aid small and mid-sized companies around Homestead Reserve Air Base, ensuring their sustainability.
The Defender Reinvestment Grant Program’s intention is not merely to spend but to invest in strengthening the relationships and resilience of Florida’s communities. With actions such as the development of a wastewater treatment plan by the Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast, and various other initiatives aimed to support growth and readiness, Governor DeSantis' administration seems unwavering in its commitment to its military and veteran population.
