Emergency communications on Oahu have been restored after a 911 system outage disrupted services yesterday. The outage affected users of major cell providers like AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile. By 3 p.m., authorities confirmed that services were restored, allowing residents to once again use their mobile devices to contact emergency services.
According to Island News, the Department of Emergency Management first reported the outage. Residents were advised to use landline phones to contact 911 during the disruption.
Specifically, those without access to a landline phone were provided with alternate numbers to reach local police districts directly. These numbers spanned across various districts in Oahu, from Honolulu to Ewa-Waianae, ensuring that aid could still be solicited amidst the digital standstill. According to Island News, the Department of Emergency Management actively worked to resolve the issue and communicated alternative points of contact throughout the ordeal.
Officials have not yet explained the technical glitch that caused the outage, as reported by Hawaii News Now.
