Drivers in Texas are all too familiar with the state's notorious traffic congestion, and recent studies have just put new numbers to the frustration many are feeling during their daily commutes. According to a Texas A&M study, Houston's 610 West Loop is currently leading the pack as the most congested stretch of roadway in the state, with a portion of the Southwest Freeway also ranking high on the list.

But it isn't just Houston making the headlines. Adding to the gridlock, a segment of I-2 in the Rio Grande Valley, specifically between U.S. Highway 281 and 10th Street, has been ranked as the 41st most congested roadway in Texas. The study, featured by myrgv.com, detailed how this stretch of road in the Pharr and McAllen area managed to surpass some major areas in Texas such as Dallas-Fort Worth and San Antonio in terms of congestion levels.

Statistics from these studies highlighted a 7% increase in average driver miles traveled over the past five years. Yet, interestingly enough, despite this increase, delays have actually decreased. These improvements have led to estimated savings of around $915 million in time and fuel for Texas drivers, as the studies point out.

TxDOT spokesperson Ray Pedraza, in a statement obtained by myrgv.com, commented on the state's traffic situation, saying, "We can see that our projects are having a significant impact on our roadways, helping improve efficiency and connectivity across the state." TxDOT notes that the I-2 and I-69C Pharr Interchange project's main lanes nearing completion are expected to further alleviate congestion upon full completion by the end of the current year.
