Travelers at Hobby Airport will soon see significant upgrades as the West Concourse expansion project gets underway. According to KHOU, Houston Airports and Southwest Airlines have partnered to add new gates, improve amenities, and enhance the baggage system. The announcement was made yesterday by officials from both the airport and the airline. Jim Szczesniak, Director of Aviation for Houston Airports, stated that the expansion is aimed at improving the overall passenger experience, not just adding more gates.
An overhead canopy connecting the parking garage to the terminal is also set to quickly become part of the landscape. Steve Sisneros, vice president of Airport Affairs at Southwest Airlines, told KHOU, "Since our first year of service in 1971, we’ve operated nonstop at Hobby Airport. It’s a cornerstone market for us, serving as a base for our flight crews and as a gateway city to our international service." The joint efforts are aimed to additionally provide a boost in travel efficiency and reduce passenger wait times.
Funding for the project was unanimously approved by the Houston City Council back in August 2023, allocating $470 million towards the expansion. The Houston Chronicle outlined this approval process which saw initial funds allocated for planning and design, followed by further funding for construction. An additional $200 million is expected to be requested to bring the project full circle.
The need for expansion at Hobby Airport is evident, with passenger traffic reaching nearly 1.3 million in the first half of 2023. According to the Houston Chronicle, officials have noted that the expansion will continue the airport's modern design, featuring natural light and a 'Houston Friendly' atmosphere. The project will also add more space for restaurants, retail, and art, aiming to improve the overall travel experience for passengers.
Renderings of the expansion have been released, offering a look at the planned improvements at Hobby Airport. The project is expected to be completed by the summer of 2027, aligning with the scope and timeline of the planned upgrades to the airport.
