A 38-year-old woman, Yesenia Espinoza, is facing a serious legal challenge, accused of both arson and the murder of Houston firefighter Marcelo Garcia III. The Houston fire community reeled following the incident at an East End warehouse on November 6. Officials say the fire she allegedly set spiraled out of control, leading to a wall collapse that killed the 10-year veteran firefighter and injured another, KHOU 11 News reported.
Caught leaving the scene in a black and white dress, Espinoza was later identified by Houston METRO police using facial recognition software, after which, according to KHOU 11 News, "They discovered surveillance videos nearby which showed that the defendant was the only one who had access to that warehouse at the time and that she had dropped a red lighter nearby," claimed Assistant District Attorney Keegan Childers. The suspect was arrested on November 9 and was granted a $100,000 surety bond prior to the murder charge.
The late Garcia, born and raised in Houston, served at Station 8 as a captain. In homage to a life dedicated to public service, firefighters at Fire Station 23 took time to remember Garcia, reflecting his strong ties to the community and commitment to service. "He was loved big time," firefighter Abby Cortez told KHOU 11 News. "I mean immensely, he was loved." His memory continues to resonate within the station where he spent six years of his career.
Espinoza's life according to family testimony to KHOU 11 News, was marked by hardship and mental health challenges. As a mother of six, she faced struggles with depression and other issues, prompting discussions alongside the legal proceedings about the potential role of mental health considerations in her trial.
Espinoza is scheduled to make her next court appearance next Monday, based on records obtained by ABC13.
