Hull Police are conducting an investigation after a student discovered a bullet within the Lillian M. Jacobs School gym last night. The incident, which took place at around 7:30 p.m. in the pre-K-to-7 building, led to a swift reaction by school authorities and law enforcement, as reported by the Hull Police Department's official statement.
Following the student's report to a sports coach, Hull Police were alerted, and an officer performed an initial search to ensure the safety of those present. In collaboration with the Massachusetts State Police, further examination of the school included a detailed K9 unit scan, specifically trained in detecting firearms and ammunition. The ammunition in question was a live .40-caliber bullet, but no further evidence of weapons or additional ammo surfaced.
Hull Police School Resource Officer Jake Mahoney spearheaded the investigation by reviewing school surveillance footage. Based on these efforts, the Hull Police Department has assured the public that, after their thorough review, they believe there is no immediate threat to student or staff safety, nor have there been any specific threats directed at Hull Public Schools.
As a precaution, the school district will have an increased police presence today. Families and staff have been kept informed through multiple updates from the district. Chief John Dunn, in a statement from the Hull Police Department, praised the actions of both the student and the coach, emphasizing the importance of community vigilance: "I would like to commend the student for doing the right thing by bringing this to the attention of a trusted adult immediately." He added, "The coach appropriately contacted our department, allowing us to conduct a prompt and efficient investigation to determine that there was no threat to students or staff." Authorities are encouraging anyone with information about the incident to contact the Hull Police Department at 781-925-1212 to assist with the ongoing investigation.
