Caltrans has announced a temporary hold on the Interstate 880 Capital Preventive Maintenance project due to weather concerns. The initiative, spearheading improvements along a stretch of I-880 from Fremont Boulevard south to the Alameda County/Santa Clara County line, aims to extend pavement life and enhance ride quality over 90 lane miles.
Caltrans reported that "due to anticipated low temperatures and potential rain, which would impact paving quality," operations are on hold until early April 2025. The resumption is tentatively set for April 7, 2025.
According to Caltrans, northbound and southbound lanes have been fully paved and permanently striped from Dixon Landing Road to Mowry Avenue. However, the path to finishing paving between Mowry Avenue and Alvarado Boulevard remains and is anticipated for summer’s end in 2025. These upgrades are not merely cosmetic. They include crucial safety improvements such as ADA-compliant curb ramp updates, installation of pedestrian flashing beacons, and enhancements to guardrails and traffic systems.
For those who prefer a more personal touch to their travel updates, Caltrans also offers a 24/7 highway condition information line, accessible by calling 1-800-427-ROAD (1-800-427-7623).
