Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) homicide detectives have recently taken a suspect into custody in connection with the death of a 72-year-old Long Beach man. The man, who had initially been the subject of what was thought to be a suicide case, was found deceased in his home with a gunshot wound on November 1. The incident occurred in the 4700 block of Greenmeadow Road and was called to authorities around 8:22 p.m., as reported by the LBPD
An investigation swiftly ensued to fully determine the origins of the fatal injury. LBPD detectives, alongside the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner's investigator, determined the wound was not self-inflicted. Subsequent probes led to the identification of William Altpeter, a 38-year-old resident of Idyllwild, as the suspect. In a coordinated effort with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office Special Weapons and Tactics team, Altpeter was arrested on Nov. 14, according to Long Beach authorities.
Following the arrest, searches were conducted at Altpeter's residence and another location in Long Beach. Evidence deemed significant to the investigation was recovered. It has been revealed by detectives that the victim and Altpeter were known to each other, as detailed by the LBPD. Despite ongoing investigations, the identity of the victim is yet to be disclosed, pending notification of next of kin.
Details surrounding the motive and circumstances that led to the shooting continue to be actively investigated. Detectives are earnestly working to piece together the incident in its entirety. William Altpeter now faces charges of murder and is currently held at the Long Beach city jail, with bail set at three million dollars. LBPD extends gratitude to the Riverside County Special Weapons and Tactics team for their role in apprehending the suspect and has openly asked for the public's assistance in providing any further information.
