Commuters in Oakland County will see all lanes on eastbound and westbound Interstate 696 reopen, following closures for the Michigan Department of Transportation's (MDOT) $275 million I-696 Restore the Reuther project. The reopening marks progress in efforts to improve road conditions in the Metro Detroit area. According to The Detroit News, the daily traffic of around 160,000 drivers is expected to move more efficiently with this development.
The project, a significant effort by MDOT, involved more than surface repairs, including a full rebuild with storm sewer replacement and ramp reconstruction at key intersections like Orchard Lake Road, American Drive, Franklin Road, and Telegraph Road. While the lanes have reopened, MDOT has indicated that orange barrels will remain along the road shoulders for signage and ongoing minor work, which is expected to continue through the end of the year. Additional tasks are set to be completed in the spring or summer of 2025, as outlined in a department press release.
This construction project was part of Governor Gretchen Whitmer's Rebuilding Michigan program, designed to improve the state's infrastructure and support its economy. The I-696 work is expected to directly and indirectly support around 3,329 jobs, emphasizing its impact on the local economy. In a statement to The Detroit News, MDOT spokesperson Diane Cross noted that the Restore the Reuther project is expected to result in an improved driving experience for Michigan motorists.
MDOT is planning another project to begin in early 2025, focused on rebuilding I-696 from Lahser Road to Interstate 75, continuing efforts to improve Michigan's roadways. The project is expected to take three years to complete, aiming to maintain the integrity of this key transportation route. While some disruptions are anticipated, MDOT has stated that the most disruptive lane closures from 2024 will not be repeated, resulting in a smoother transition during the final stages of the work. Drivers are encouraged to stay informed about upcoming projects and roadwork details on the MDOT website at DrivingOakland.com.
