The National Weather Service (NWS) in Jacksonville, FL, has issued a coastal flood advisory that remains in effect until 4 AM EST tomorrow. The advisory warns of minor coastal flooding along with a dangerous rip current risk that is now in effect through late tonight for several areas including Coastal Duval, Coastal St. Johns, and Coastal Flagler Counties.
Flooding of lots, parks, and roads with only isolated closures expected, according to the advisory. However, despite the risk, residents who must travel should prepare for potential disruptions. "If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth," the NWS advises, in a bid to ensure that the areas affected by the flooding take the necessary actions to safeguard their flood-prone property.
In addition to the flooding, hazardous rip currents are expected to pose a significant threat to even the experienced swimmers. These currents are said to have the strength to pull individuals away from shore and into deeper waters. The NWS cautions, "Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don`t swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline." Those unable to escape should attract attention by facing the shore and calling or waving for help.
Weather forecasts for the region predict mostly sunny skies today with a high near 84, but the tranquility is short-lived as the chance of showers and thunderstorms increases after 3 AM. The NWS outlines a 30 percent chance of this weather change, so residents should be mindful, taking note that the gusts could be as high as 16 mph. A 60 percent chance of precipitation is forecasted for tomorrow, indicating a wetter outlook for the middle of the week.
