Dallas Animal Services is taking a unique approach to ease its overcapacity issues with a "Moonlight Muttness" event aiming to encourage the adoption of canines who need homes. Set for Saturday, November 23, the shelter is extending its usual hours and will open its doors from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. in hopes of finding new homes for its furry residents, which are currently at a critical 142% capacity.
The shelter's overcrowding has reached a point where operations are being compromised, making it necessary to fast-track adoptions before essential facility repairs are initiated, and here, the urgency is palpable the numbers don't lie because they stand currently above the sustainable threshold and the clock is ticking on getting the work underway. According to the City of Dallas, Director Paul Ramon highlighted the pressing situation: "We have to get these repairs done as soon as possible, but we need to get our population down to at or below capacity."
Not just aiming for adoptions, DAS is also calling on the community to consider fostering, which can provide temporary relief for the facility and offer a reprieve for the dogs in their care. Ramon continues, "Even if now is not the time for your family to adopt, fostering a dog for a few weeks or more can directly impact our ability to complete these repairs with little disruption to our life-saving efforts", as per the City of Dallas.
