Jury deliberations have begun in the murder trial of Garrett Hardin, the ex-Harris County Sheriff's Office sergeant charged in the fatal shooting of shoplifting suspect Roderick Brooks. The decision shifted to the jurors following the presentation of closing arguments yesterday morning. Hardin stands accused of shooting and killing Brooks, who was reportedly stealing laundry detergent from a nearby Dollar General, according to KHOU.
During the confrontation captured on bodycam footage in July 2022, Hardin responded to the shoplifting report and pursued Brooks. After an attempted Taser strike failed, Hardin tackled Brooks to the ground. The prosecution alleges that despite Brooks’ attempt to grab the Taser, Hardin, who was sitting on Brooks' back, had the time and took the decision to fatally shoot Brooks in the neck. However, the defense maintains that Hardin acted in self-defense after feeling pain from the Taser wires, which had become wedged between them, as reported by the Houston Chronicle.
The bodycam video released by the Harris County Sheriff's Office revealed a struggle between Hardin and Brooks with Brooks grabbing the Taser and Hardin warning, "I’m going to shoot you, put that down. I will f****** shoot you." After a scuffle over the Taser and Brooks appearing to reach for it again, Hardin discharged his firearm, resulting in Brooks' death.
If convicted of murder, Hardin faces a potential life sentence. The jury is not given the option to consider lesser charges, and Hardin, who lost his job post-indictment, has been on trial without the jurors being aware of his employment status. During the trial, Hardin donned a pin, in the shape of a sheriff's office star on his suit jacket lapel—a subtle emblem of his past association with law enforcement, the Houston Chronicle described.
The incident has stirred emotions and debate within the community, with Brooks' family publicly condemning the action as an execution. "We want the world to know Roderick was executed," Brooks' sister, Demetria Brooks-Glaze, had previously stated. His family emphasized the disproportionate nature of the response to an alleged shoplifting incident, capturing the grief and outrage at their loved one’s loss. With a verdict pending, the case remains a poignant example of the tensions in law enforcement responses to crime and the use of lethal force, as KHOU reported.
