Kent County is mourning after a vehicle accident resulted in the deaths of a mother and her infant child. The Kent County Sheriff’s Office reported to FOX 17 that the crash occurred yesterday morning during a rainstorm, causing the family’s pickup truck to hydroplane and collide with an embankment on 84th Avenue, west of Thornapple River Drive.
The sequence of events, as also corroborated by mlive, unfolded when the 40-year-old father from Woodland lost control of the westbound vehicle. Meanwhile, his 36-year-old wife, and their 17-month-old baby were unbuckled from their seat belts as the mother attended to the child in the backseat.
WoodTV reported on the efforts of an off-duty emergency room doctor who witnessed the crash and quickly attempted to provide medical assistance to the victims. Despite these efforts, both the mother and child suffered fatal injuries and could not be revived. The husband, who was driving the pickup truck at the time of the accident, was not physically injured.
In a gesture of sympathy, "The KCSO extends our deepest condolences to the family and all who are impacted by this tragic accident," stated the sheriff's office in a release, an expression shared by mlive.
Investigations are ongoing as authorities work to determine all the factors involved in this incident, as noted by FOX 17 report.
