A Lancaster County man has been arrested and charged with homicide following a violent altercation that left his girlfriend dead and her brother severely injured. The man, identified as 49-year-old Benjamin Garcia Gual, is accused of fatally stabbing his girlfriend, 50-year-old Carmen Martinez-Silva, after a dispute over her haircut escalated. According to ABC27, a family member witnessed the attack and informed the police that Garcia Gual became enraged after Martinez-Silva cut her hair, threatening her life over the change in appearance.
In a detailed account, Martinez-Silva's daughter, Yamaris Knight, recalled to PennLive that her mother stayed at her house out of fear the night before she was killed because Garcia Gual had threatened to stab her over her new haircut. Knight's testimony stated that her mother had sought refuge with her due to the intensifying threats posed by Garcia Gual. Court documents revealed that Martinez-Silva had requested a witness to convey to Garcia Gual that their relationship was over, but he could not be found then.
The tragic chain of events unfolded further when Garcia Gual arrived at Martinez-Silva's brother’s home in East Hempfield Township, where the stabbing took place. Luis Martinez-Silva, the brother of the victim, initially told the assailant that Martinez-Silva was not home. After a brief departure, Garcia Gual returned and began his attack as Luis answered the door, according to court records detailed by local21news. The brother suffered multiple stab wounds, including a serious injury at the base of his skull, but is expected to survive.
Following the altercation, both men were taken to a hospital. Police found Garcia Gual in a Toyota Corolla with a silver kitchen knife stained with what appeared to be blood on the passenger seat. He has been charged with homicide, attempted homicide, aggravated assault, and additional offenses. Investigators pieced together witness statements, which painted a picture of a distressingly violent response to a personal decision made by Martinez-Silva regarding her appearance. Luis's attempt to protect his sister ultimately led to a violent encounter that authorities say ended in her tragic death.
