Merchant Oyster Co., a cornerstone of the Lawrenceville area's nightlife and a beloved spot for seafood lovers, will shuck its final shell next week. This closing marks the end of a seven-year run for the popular Pittsburgh eatery, which specializes in serving fresh oysters, lobster rolls, and a variety of chowders.

Chef and owner Dennis Marron took to social media to announce the upcoming closure. Although the decision was difficult, he was endlessly grateful for the memories, laughter, and love shared since the restaurant's opening. According to CBS News Pittsburgh, the establishment will bid its patrons farewell with a "Last Shucking Good Time" event on December 4, where guests can revel in the restaurant's favorite dishes accompanied by live music.

The closure of Merchant Oyster Co. hasn't come out of the blue. It results from challenges, including an investor's withdrawal from the Pittsburgh market, rising seafood costs, and staffing hurdles. Furthermore, as TribLive reported, the decision to sell the building earlier in the year started a domino effect on staff retention. "It's a hard maybe at this point," Marron said, considering someone buying the property to continue the business.

Amid the emotional goodbye, Marron also faces the practicalities of closing a business – dealing with unpaid bills and the fate of his staff. To address these issues, he has turned to crowdfunding, creating a GoFundMe page to help pay outstanding bills and assist his staff in the transition.

The farewell celebration will last from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m., and tickets are $90. Participants will enjoy a spread of Merchant Oyster Co.’s cherished offerings one last time. For those interested in attending the "Last Shucking Good Time" party, additional details and ticket purchases can be found through links in the restaurant's closing announcements on social media.
