On Sunday, an East Texas school bus carrying a high school cheerleading team was involved in a multi-vehicle crash on I-69 near SH-288 in Houston. According to a Click2Houston report, the bus from Lufkin High School in Lufkin ISD was on its way to a competition in Rosenberg when the accident occurred.
The collision, which involved a total of eight vehicles, led to a temporary shutdown of the highway as emergency services and law enforcement responded to the scene. Officials state that the bus was carrying 34 students and several adults. Out of those, three students required medical attention and were transported to a hospital, later all of them were released, including one who had been held for observation. "All students have been checked out, received medical attention, and have been released as of this evening. Lufkin ISD would like to thank everyone for their well wishes, thoughts and prayers," the district said in a statement obtained by Click2Houston.
Moreover, a separate report by FOX26 Houston mentioned that an additional individual, whose vehicle affiliation was not immediately clear, was also injured in the crash. This incident took place just after 10:30 a.m. on the southbound lanes under SH-288, and the cause remains under investigation. The crash resulted in significant traffic disruptions until the vehicles and debris were cleared.
"Lufkin ISD appreciates the support and assistance of first responders, staff, and parents who arrived on the scene," the district expressed in a post on Facebook. The cheer team, presumably shaken by the incident, is said to be heading back to Lufkin.
