A 33-year-old man was fatally shot in West Philadelphia, with police describing the event as a likely targeted attack. Officers from the Philadelphia Police Department, who were patrolling around 52nd and Market Street around midnight, heard multiple gunshots and found the man on the sidewalk, afflicted by multiple gunshot wounds, as reported by PHL17. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he was pronounced dead shortly before arrival.
Detectives at the scene collected 21 shell casings and are currently reviewing surveillance cameras in the hopes of piecing together the events that led to the shooting. Responding to the event, Chief Inspector Scott Small indicated there might have been a woman present during the incident, believing "she might have been a witness to this homicide," as he told PHL17. Running from the scene right after the gunfire, two men were seen, with the victim's residence being only a block away from the shooting's location.
According to 6ABC, the barrage of bullets left the man dead near the 5200 block of Market Street. Police noted that the shell casings were found near where the man was fatally shot. Further investigations are relying on surveillance footage from nearby cameras, including real-time police cameras, to gather more details about the suspects involved in the deadly shooting.
To capture a description of the killers, investigators are banking on footage from the neighborhood to assist. "Investigators hoped surveillance video from nearby businesses would help get them a description of the killer(s)," Chief Inspector Scott Small relayed to NBC Philadelphia. The nature of the shooting—more than 20 shots aimed within a circled area close-range to the victim—suggests this was a deliberate act, though no immediate motive has been determined. Philadelphia police data indicates that homicides are actually at their lowest yearly total since 2014, with at least 238 killings reported this year, as stated in NBC Philadelphia.
