Long-awaited relief has arrived for local mariners and visitors to Mānele Small Boat Harbor, as the main road, previously closed for repairs, is now open. The Department of Land and Natural Resources announced that, after eight months of construction and inconvenience, the heavily used harbor roadway reopened last Wednesday.
The closure, originally prompted by a series of water main breaks, caused significant disruption to the flow of traffic between the harbor's upper road and the lower, makai road. Although the majority of the road is now accessible to the public, the middle section will remain closed until further notice.
In efforts to mitigate confusion and improve navigational efficiency around the harbor area, the Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation (DOBOR) staff took measures to update the traffic signs. These changes aim to keep the harbor organized for the seasonal influx of visitors and the local boating community.
Looking ahead, DOBOR is preparing to enhance roadway lines as part of the next phase in road improvements, scheduled to begin in December 2024. This project is part of a broader initiative to keep the harbor functional and safe for all users. With high traffic expected from both tourists and locals, clear road markings are essential.
