The Commonwealth of Massachusetts recently celebrated the 41st Annual Trooper George L. Hanna Memorial Awards for Bravery, honoring law enforcement officers who have displayed exceptional courage in the line of duty. Hosted by Governor Maura Healey, Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll, and Public Safety and Security Secretary Terrence Reidy, the ceremony took place at the State House, honoring 11 members of law enforcement from across the state. Since its inception in 1983, following Trooper Hanna's death during a routine vehicle stop, 177 individuals have received this prestigious award.
According to Massachusetts State Police, this year's ceremony was particularly meaningful, with George Hanna's daughters, Deborah and Kimberly, helping present the awards alongside Governor Healey to honor their father's legacy. "Today’s recipients reflect the enduring legacy of Trooper George Hanna, whose life and service continue to inspire us all. Their stories remind us of the immense bravery required in this profession and the sacrifices officers and their families make to keep our communities safe," Governor Healey said in a statement.
One of the Medal of Valor recipients was Officer Kevin M. Martins from the Acushnet Police Department, who continued his duty despite being wounded outside the Bayside Lounge in Fairhaven. Another Medal of Valor recipient, Officer Molly E. Plante from the Berlin Police Department, showed extraordinary bravery during an April house explosion. She rescued a victim trapped under debris just moments before a second explosion. Lieutenant Governor Driscoll also acknowledged the importance of family support, stating, "As we honor these heroes, we also extend heartfelt gratitude to their families, whose love and support makes their service possible. We acknowledge the significant sacrifices made by the families of first responders and the emotional burden of awaiting their loved one’s safe return after each shift," in a Massachusetts State Police release.
Officer Matthew J.T. Flynn of the Massachusetts Port Authority Police Department received the Medal of Honor for his life-saving actions in Boston Harbor. Each officer recognized at the event demonstrated the selflessness and dedication of law enforcement.
The Hanna Awards represent more than moments of valor; they symbolize a commitment to public safety that impacts entire communities. "Every day, law enforcement officers across Massachusetts confront life-threatening situations with remarkable courage and selflessness," said Security Secretary Reidy in a statement obtained by the Massachusetts State Police.
