Massachusetts has surged forward as a frontrunner in the United States for the growth of its outdoor recreation economy. Data released by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) underscored that this sector pumped a hefty $13.2 billion into the state's economy in 2023, according to a report from the Massachusetts Government. Whatsmore, this industry is credited with creating 103,600 jobs across the state.
Notably, Massachusetts' outdoor recreation economy has witnessed a 13.3 percent upsurge between 2022 and 2023, unmatched by any other state. "This incredible growth in our outdoor recreation economy highlights our communities’ strong commitment to promoting outdoor activities," said Governor Maura Healey in a statement marked by significant enthusiasm. With a 73 percent increase since 2012, the sector's expansion is particularly prominent, as obtained by the Massachusetts Government.
The economic repercussions resonate deeply with local communities, as emphasized by Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll, "Local communities are the backbone of our outdoor recreation economy," she told Massachusetts Government. This underscores the integral role of towns and cities in fostering active lifestyles and preserving natural spaces that jolt local economies and job creation. This nexus of community action and economic vigor breathes life into these vibrant hubs of outdoor activity.
Massachusetts' commitment to inclusive outdoor access has been central, as outlined by Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Rebecca Tepper, "Since launching our Office of Outdoor Recreation, we have made it our mission to ensure that the outdoors is accessible and inclusive to everyone," she said. The Office of Outdoor Recreation, or MOOR, proved pivotal since its establishment in December 2022, collaborating with various stakeholders to prop up the outdoor scene statewide. MOOR's director Paul Jahnige summarizes the sentiment: "This data emphasizes the importance of outdoor recreation, not just for individuals, but for our communities as a whole," as reported by the Massachusetts Government.
Kate Fox, the Executive Director at the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism, highlighted the tourism angle, stating, "Massachusetts' outdoor recreation is a key component of our tourism industry." Tourists worldwide are drawn to the state's scenic offerings, from lush forests to vibrant parks, endorsing the economic boon that these natural wonders provide, as per the Massachusetts Government.
In a collective assertion of outdoor recreation's foundational role in the national economy, Jessica Turner, President of the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable (ORR), recognized its resilience. "With over $1.2 trillion in economic output and generating over 5 million jobs, this marks another year of growth for the outdoor recreation economy," she informed the public. Turner's comments reveal that a flourishing outdoor recreation sector not only pads the economy but stands as a testament to Americans' enhanced quality of life through engagement with nature, according to the Massachusetts Government.
