Mayor Eric Adams has taken a firm stand against potential disruptions at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, referring to would-be protesters as "grinches." In a recent statement, Adams expressed zero tolerance for parade interruptions, saying, "I really want to take the moment to tell those grinches that believe they are going to disrupt the parade that it is not going to happen," as reported by the New York Post. This statement follows last year’s incident where anti-Israel protesters halted the parade by gluing their hands to the route.
The New York Police Department, under the guidance of NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, has also reassured that there are currently “no credible or specific threats” against the parade. Tisch urged attendees to remain vigilant, to always be report anything suspicious, and to consider public transport as a means to safely attend the event in light of street closures. The comprehensive safety plan for the event involves both visible and covert security measures and relies on the collaboration of several city agencies and the public’s cooperation, as illustrated in a statement obtained by the City of New York.
During a pre-parade briefing, Deputy Mayor Chauncey Parker spoke on behalf of the administration, detailing the extensive cooperation between city officials and Macy's Inc. to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all. Sharon Otterman, Chief Marketing Officer for Macy's, spoke candidly about the parade's significance and the long-standing tradition it holds for New Yorkers. Otterman highlighted the extensive effort involving 5,000 volunteers and the grand appearance of Santa Claus at the end of the parade, as per her statement to the City of New York.
Mayor Adams elaborated on the economic benefits the parade brings to the city, noting that it marks the start of a significant shopping season. Speaking to the official website of the City of New York, he stated, "This brings so much economic prosperity to our city, and it means so much to us." The Mayor further assured that city authorities are prepared to address any disruptions swiftly, emphasizing that public safety remains a top priority. This focus on security, reinforced by firm declarations from city officials, highlights their commitment to maintaining order during this year's parade festivities. The city's resilience and dedication to upholding traditions, even amid potential challenges, were emphasized in interviews and statements from New York officials.
