Mayor Cavalier Johnson of Milwaukee signed two pieces of legislation on Friday to honor the late Third District Alderman Jonathan Brostoff. According to FOX6, the mayor emphasized the importance of the initiatives, stating, "Both of these pieces of legislation are significant in their own right because they are seeking to advance our city and move Milwaukee forward."

A recent piece of legislation allows Milwaukee's Environmental Collaboration Office to pursue clean energy tax credits, supporting the city's sustainability efforts. Additionally, Mayor Johnson signed a zoning change to support the River Trail Commons, a co-housing project in Brostoff's district. Regarding the zoning change, the mayor said, "We all remember him for many reasons, one of which was his desire to move government in the right direction,” as reported by FOX6.

The River Trail Commons project, which Mayor Johnson supported at its future location, aligns with Alderman Brostoff's vision for affordable housing in the area. This cohousing development is part of Brostoff's broader effort to diversify housing options and address affordability. Diana Vang-Brostoff, Brostoff's widow, joined Mayor Johnson at the event, with the backing of nine out of the fourteen living Common Council members. She stated, "When Jonathan took an oath of office, he decided he would work very hard to create affordable housing in the Third District," as detailed by WTMJ.

The signing event also gave community leaders an opportunity to reflect on Alderman Brostoff's legacy following his tragic passing earlier this month at the age of 41. Mayor Johnson, while focusing on the project site, said, "A big part of the reason why I wanted to sign these files publicly was to honor Jonathan, and to recommit ourselves to Jonathan’s approach, was to be forward thinking.” The ceremonial signing moved the River Trail Commons project forward and also recognized Alderman Brostoff's enduring impact on policies aimed at community development and environmental awareness in Milwaukee, as stated by WTMJ.
