Meadow Gold Dairies Hawaii, a staple in the state's dairy industry since 1897, has announced substantial layoffs across several islands, with nearly 200 employees affected. According to KHON2, the job cuts come as the company plans to cease managing its own warehousing and distribution operations. Partnering with Hawaii Foodservice Alliance and Pacific Provisions Hawaii, Meadow Gold aims to focus on expanding its local production and increasing value-added manufacturing.
The layoffs are anticipated to begin in January and span across various locations, impacting 49 employees on Oahu, 24 in Hilo, 19 in Kahului, and seven on Kauai, as noted by the same KHON2 report.
Hawaii News Now, detailed that the reductions also include roles ranging from drivers to sales personnel, not excluding one singing costume character.
Meadow Gold has expressed its commitment to making this transition as smooth as possible for its soon-to-be former employees. "After careful consideration, we decided to transition away from managing our own warehousing and distribution operations to focus on expanding local production and investing in value-added local manufacturing to align with our vision to support Hawaii’s dairy industry. While this is a significant transition, we believe it is necessary to strengthen our long-term ability to deliver high-quality products and to uphold the standards Hawaii deserves while moving us closer, as an island-state, toward greater sustainability and increasing the ability to keep producing locally made products," the company articulated in a statement obtained by KHON2.
The company's legacy on Oahu can trace back its beginnings over a century ago, but in 2020, milk processing operations on the island drew to a close. Looking ahead, Meadow Gold conveyed: "We look forward to this partnership to create a more sustainable future for local families by aligning our interests toward a common goal," as per the statement provided to KHON2. Inquiries directed to the unions representing some of the workers have yet to receive a response. Meadow Gold Dairies anticipates that these structural changes will strengthen their long-term capabilities in delivering quality products as well as move Hawaii closer to sustainability and self-sufficiency in local food production.
