A DeSoto County jury convicted Memphis man Mark McDaniel of second-degree murder for the 2022 shooting of Southaven football player Christian Saulsberry. The decision came down yesterday after a three-day trial. Saulsberry, who graduated from Northpoint High School in 2015 and played for the CFL's Edmonton Elks, died after being hit by stray bullets during a party in Walls, Mississippi.

According to WREG, prosecutors argued that McDaniel was intoxicated and combative before the shooting occurred. He was ejected multiple times from the event, which escalated into a physical confrontation with the host. McDaniel then retrieved a gun from his vehicle, firing into the crowd and fatally wounding Saulsberry, who was merely an innocent bystander with his back turned.

"McDaniel’s violent actions were senseless, and the impact on Christian’s family is immeasurable," DeSoto County District Attorney Matthew Barton said in a statement obtained by The Commercial Appeal. "While nothing can undo the pain this family has suffered, today’s verdict ensures that justice has been done. We hope this brings some semblance of closure, though the wound left by the loss of such a bright, young life will never fully heal."

The tragic event took place during a clothing reveal, and birthday celebration, eyewitnesses recalled Saulsberry not being involved in the initial altercation. As reported by Action News 5, Saulsberry was described as an individual who was impactful both on and off the field. John Stevenson, who coached Saulsberry in middle school and during his first two high school seasons, remembered him in 2022 as "a lot of explosion in a small package," affirming the player's hard work and potential despite the challenges faced by less sizeable athletes.

Sentencing for McDaniel is slated for Dec. 17.
