Mesa will honor its veterans with the annual East Valley Veterans Parade on November 11, presented by Google Fiber. The parade starts at 11 a.m. in downtown Mesa, featuring over 100 entries beginning at Center Street and University Drive. This year’s theme is "Arizona Heroes in the Global War on Terrorism," recognizing the service and sacrifices of those involved in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars and their families, as reported by the City of Mesa.
A key feature of the parade is the recognition of Retired Army Sergeant Dan Piotrowski, who will serve as this year's grand marshal. Piotrowski is a 22-year veteran known for his bravery, including surviving explosions and restoring vital communications in dangerous situations. After sustaining a concussion from a truck bomb explosion in Afghanistan, he and his communications specialist managed to restore critical radio and internet services within an hour, according to the City of Mesa.
On November 11, at 10:30 a.m., Mesa Mayor John Giles will honor veterans before the parade. Street closures will start at 6 a.m. for parade staging, with normal traffic expected to resume around 2 p.m. City offices will be closed for the holiday, but some facilities, like the Red Mountain Center and Dobson Ranch Golf Course, will have modified hours. Public transportation will run on regular weekday schedules, but some services, like Express and RAPID, will not operate, as stated by the City of Mesa.
Veterans and active military personnel will get free admission to the Arizona Museum of Natural History on Veterans Day. The Commemorative Air Force Museum will offer free admission for U.S. Armed Forces members on November 9. Mesa will also host the Royal Air Force Cadet Memorial Service on November 10 to honor British and American pilots trained at Falcon Field during World War II, as mentioned by the City of Mesa.
