A Florida insurance broker has entered a guilty plea to bank fraud charges after perpetrating a $6 million scam targeting Peach State Federal Credit Union. Heleonel Gonzalez, connected with Miami Lakes' Sharp Insurance Agency, Inc., used deceit to siphon off loan proceeds intended for insurance premiums, repurposing the money for his own debt and expenses, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

“Gonzalez devised a lucrative scheme cloaked in fraud and deception to steal loan proceeds from Peach State Federal Credit Union for his personal gain,” U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Buchanan explained. The statement, from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Georgia, went on to affirm their continuing efforts in partnership with law enforcement to tackle financial wrongdoings.

During a span from approximately January 2023 through January 2024, Gonzalez engaged in fraudulent activities, convincing Peach State Federal Credit Union to issue loans by submitting forged documents on behalf of customers. These Premium Finance Agreements indicated an insurance policy was in effect when, in truth, the policies were nonexistent. Sean Burke, Acting Special Agent in Charge of FBI Atlanta, noted that the scheme not only damaged business integrity but also imposed a multi-million dollar loss on the Georgian credit union, as per the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Scheduled for sentencing on February 20, 2025, the 48-year-old broker from Florida may face significant consequences for his actions, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office. The case against Gonzalez was propelled by investigative efforts from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney John Russell Phillips leading the prosecution. Questions and requests for further details are being directed towards the U.S. Attorney’s Public Affairs Office.
