The holiday season at Midland Mall is seeing a new addition that's more about giving than receiving. Two "Light the World Giving Machines" have been installed, providing a novel way for shoppers to donate to charitable causes. These high-tech vending machines operate much like conventional ones, but instead of snacks and drinks, they offer the chance to give to local and global charities.
According to a release by WNEM, patrons can choose to donate items such as potatoes to the East Side Soup Kitchen, stuffed animals for children entering foster care, or even livestock like a goat. Giving Machine Coordinator Jessica Larsen said, "All of the funds that we raise are just this amazing opportunity for us to share and build bridges with our community. It’s really about connecting with others and finding ways to serve in small and simple ways." The machines will be available through December 31 near the St. Laurent Brothers store inside Midland Mall.
According to a report by MidMichiganNow, the Giving Machines have been a success since their inception in 2017, raising over $33 million for various causes around the globe. Jessica Larsen told MidMichiganNow, "If you can pause for just a few minutes and come to the vending machine, you’re really going to feel the impact that they have on you and your community."
Charitable groups in the region have welcomed the initiative, including card transactions that fund essential items through the recipient charities. As stated in a report by ABC12, the machines are part of a larger network that includes over 100 cities worldwide. After a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, they are now in full operation at the mall. The initiative spans 106 locations in 14 countries, bringing a fresh and tangible approach to charity during a season often overwhelmed with commercialism and consumerism.
